It started out with a stitch.

How did it end up like this?

It was only a stitch.

It was only a stitch.

a girl on youtube is attacking me for my cosplay makeup tutorial because it’s apparently “making all the happy girls out there who think they don’t need make up feel bad”

ain’t no social justice like youtube social justice

I was just thinking about this as I was doing my makeup for Lydia. And funnily enough, I thought of Nina’s video as I was thinking about it. So the fact that this comes up on my dash is pretty scarily coincidental tonight.

Personally, I’m of the school of thought that in cosplay, makeup is essential. It’s not about beauty or enhancement necessarily either. Not wearing makeup is iffy for the same reason using real hair is frowned upon. It doesn’t photograph well. And lights—be they professional lights for a photoshoot or those nasty convention hall lights—wash you out.

In stage productions, young children and even men wear makeup. Even in television shows. It’s not all YOU’RE UGLY LET’S FIX IT. It’s about making sure the shot doesn’t look strange. And cameras do weird things to peoples’ faces, okay?

There’s a major difference between wearing no makeup and wearing natural looking makeup or makeup that looks minimal. Just because your character doesn’t look like they wear makeup—or they are male and don’t partake in that sort of thing—that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wear any.

tl;dr cosplayers don’t need makeup because they’re ugly and NEED makeup. They need it because lights and cameras and “ew that isn’t what my face actually looks like wtf happened” just trust me okay?

Just in case anyone is confused about why you “need” makeup for cosplay/photography, Lauren stated it perfectly! It’s not a matter of makeup vs. natural beauty vs. self-esteem, it’s simply about making sure you’re not washed out/sickly-looking on camera.

Intense eye makeup, blush, vivid lipstick - those are extra details that you can change depending on the character, but a good base foundation is necessary to make sure that the camera and lighting don’t have a negative effect on your appearance. (And this goes for crossplay as well! Good foundation and contouring will make your crossplay even more convincing.)

Whether or not you wear makeup on a daily basis is totally up to you. Natural beauty is a wonderful thing! And makeup is fun! It’s your personal choice. No one needs makeup - but it’s absolutely fine if you like to wear it, and that doesn’t make you a bad person and it doesn’t mean you have ~terrible self-esteem.

But for cosplay, makeup is a good thing. It’s just another element of the costume, like contacts or a wig.

Can I kiss and cuddle a text post? Because I’d like it to be this text post.

LOVE YOURSELF:

fahrlight:

I want to let you know something. Something everybody on this planet should know.

YOU ARE ALLOWED TO LOVE YOURSELF.

Even if you are “nothing special” to anybody. Or without a talent or a hobby that makes you stand out. Or even if you do something crazy with your life and a lot of people laugh about you. Or your parents don’t believe in you, or you are single and hate it. Or you feel alone or or or.

No matter what. You are allowed and even obliged to love yourself. For who you are. You can be proud. Even if you are loud and vein and a little hysterical, even if you are calm and boring and lazy. Or even if you are aggressive and self obsessed.

You are you and that you were born makes you worth of love and respect. And if anyone does not do this, give them hell. OR walk away like the BAMF you are, deep inside.

Tall, short, big, small, skinny, chubby - no matter just love yourself and dress like you want, and pose like you want and show yourself.

I love myself like this:

This is all me. It is how I look and how I feel best looking. My inside is different from it, but I try to bring my inner self to light by dressing special.

You can be so many version of yourself, it is up to you. You are your own piece of art. No one has the right to tell you otherwise.

LOVE YOURSELF! BE PROUD OF YOURSELF! - I am. And nobody can tell me otherwise.
